When Bobby Cannavale pops up in something, you know you’re about to see a top notch character actor at work. Blue Moon is no exception, as Cannavale plays a patient bartender with a kind ear in a manner that only he could. It’s the kind of role that’s not showy, but easily makes the film better for his presence. Earlier this week, I spoke to star Ethan Hawke and director Richard Linklater (here). Today, it’s Cannavale’s turn.
In my review out of the Telluride Film Festival (here), I praised the cast, including Cannavale and Hawke, like so:
Ethan Hawke is extraordinary here, inhabiting Lorenz Hart in all his glory and sadness. Getting to do some major monologuing, it’s an absolutely hypnotic performance. You never miss the sadness within him, but Hawke is also sure to allow all of his charm to shine through as well. It’s stunning work. Bobby Cannavale is very amusing as the bartender lending a sympathetic ear, while Andrew Scott comes on strong in a few scenes opposite Hawke. Margaret Qualley shines as well playing Hart’s protege who is beginning to realize that else is on his mind. They all share wonderful chemistry with each other.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Cannavale. We had our discussion shortly after I spoke to Hawke and Linklater, so that influences things a bit. Of course, the movie is so good that I could talk to anyone about it for hours, let alone one of the central cast members. In particular, he’s thrilled to be talking about this latest collaboration with Linklater. When you see Blue Moon, which is out this weekend, you’ll be delighted to see just how strong he is within.
Here now is my interview with Blue Moon co-star Bobby Cannavale. Enjoy:
Blue Moon is in theaters this weekend!
