It has been a FANTASTIC (pun intended) weekend at the box office with the release of Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And after a rocky start to the year, the studio is officially back on top with an adaptation of their first family that has been well-received by both critics and audiences alike.
And unlike Thunderbolts*, which, despite good reviews, opened at a lukewarm box office and never recovered, The Fantastic Four have made their debut in a big way, with a $118 million domestic opening and $218 million globally. It has already surpassed its $200 million budget, and the movie will likely go out in the same way as Deadpool & Wolverine, since the word-of-mouth reception seems far more positive than Marvel’s previous outings.
Not only that, but The Fantastic Four: First Steps has set a record as the biggest opening ever for a Fantastic Four film, and the fourth 2025 movie to open at $100 million domestically. It is also a rare occasion where we see two blockbusters open at over $100 million, with James Gunn‘s Superman being the other title.
Although it did not open as big (or bigger) than Superman, the film’s opening weekend is a good first step (again, pun intended) in the right direction for Marvel to win back their public after many years of films and shows of inconsistent quality. The good news is that, for some time, we will not be getting a Marvel picture until (likely) next July with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which will lead into Avengers: Doomsday in December.
Will both fully win back the audience, or is the MCU in a perpetual void of hits and flops? We will find out at some point, but it’s great to see a healthy box office for a change, at this point in time.
