It’s a major win for theatres and Apple, as F1 the Movie has overperformed expectations, both domestically and globally, and opened at a $55.6 million domestic tally, with its global total now exceeding $144 million. While it may not be as impressive as Top Gun: Maverick‘s opening, it is still a great sign for Apple that ditching theatrical is maybe not such a great idea after all.
F1 the Movie is now Apple’s highest-grossing ever opening, and it’s more than clear that the film will leg out during the 4th of July weekend and make its $200 million budget back. Of course, the commercial perennity of the Formula 1 brand is extremely high, but it’s also a testament to Joseph Kosinski‘s love of big screen entertainment, which has now made him a household name in delivering significant critical and commercial successes that all ages can enjoy.
Of course, many competitors will arrive in the circuit relatively soon, such as Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic World Rebirth next week, which could halt F1’s momentum. However, the early social media reactions from audiences who have seen the film aren’t very positive. We’ll find out what critics think about the film tomorrow, but I do think audiences aren’t biting mediocre entertainment anymore, and Rebirth‘s box office could potentially suffer if reviews aren’t as strong, considering how badly-received the last installment was.
That said, Dominion did make over $1 billion at the global box office, and there’s a massive possibility that this picture does the same, but it will have to go head-to-head with two more juggernauts: Superman (which Warner Bros. is betting huge on) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Matt Shakman‘s adaptation of the Fantastic Four has garnered the highest presales of any movie released this year, but James Gunn‘s first “official” installment in the DCU (Creature Commandos was considered an amuse-bouche) may also rake in the big bucks and potentially surpass Fantastic Four, if Thunderbolts*’s box office was any indication of the MCU being in a pretty terrible spot.
We’ll see how audiences land on all three major blockbusters releasing a few weeks apart from one another, but one thing’s for sure: the big screen is undoubtedly back!
