Who Should Be the Next James Bond?

Yesterday on the Awards Radar Podcast (listen here), Myles and I discussed several of the options being bandied about to take over the role of James Bond from Daniel Craig. I also posted yesterday a piece here about potential Bond directors, but today, it’s 007 himself that’s the focus. They’ll get the crew behind the camera figured out, of course, but who will Amazon MGM get to play the super spy? Now that’s the real question that many have been trying to figure out, literally since No Time to Die ended. Today, I have some options to share.

Regé-Jean Page

On the podcast, we ran down the options presented in this GQ article here, with Myles especially being mostly underwhelmed with the candidates. I have a few that I’m more interested in than others, which is at least a starting point. However, no one actually has come to me as the obvious one. Last time out, Craig wasn’t the obvious choice, admittedly, even though he was the right one. Back then, Clive Owen was seen as the clear pick, though the runner-up to Craig actually was Henry Cavill. So, hope springs eternal.

These are my top ten choices to play James Bond, in preferential order:

Josh O’Connor

10. Joseph Quinn

9. Andrew Garfield

8. Aaron Taylor-Johnson

7. Harris Dickinson

6. Richard Madden

5. Idris Elba

4. James Norton

3. Regé-Jean Page

2. Theo James

1. Josh O’Connor

Theo James

As you can see, the options are…not great. Josh O’Connor is my top pick, which is controversial to many, but he fits the rougher look that Ian Fleming originally created. Plus, he’s just a terrifically exciting up and coming actor. Regé-Jean Page is someone I’ve recently really started to see as a potential Bond, while Theo James has impressed me of late, giving him a leg up as well, in my humble opinion. Those are the top three and probably the names I’d be most excited about. Idris Elba would be great, though he’s likely aged out. Someone like James Norton? Sure, but he won’t generate excitement. So, it’s not going to be an easy selection for Amazon MGM, to put it mildly.

Hopefully, the powers that be with Bond (rumored to be David Heyman and Amy Pascal, though that remains to be officially seen) have people in mind. Whether they’re the names above or someone else entirely, getting 007 right is pivital. It won’t work without the right person playing James Bond. Fingers crossed they can pull it off…

Who would you like to see play James Bond? Let us know!

57 years-old and stands to gain nothing from such a commitment at this point in his career. I’d say he’s a longshot at best.
