Bleecker Street Acquires ‘Spinal Tap II’ For September Release

Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. distribution rights to This is Spinal Tap and its upcoming sequel, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The 1984 movie, directed by Rob Reiner and starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, will be re-released in theatres this summer, with a newly-restored version for audiences to either discover for the first time or rediscover. Prior to the sequel’s release, the original movie will also debut on streaming platforms and be made widely available on video-on-demand for the first time in years.

Reiner returned to the director’s chair for the hotly-anticipated sequel to This is Spinal Tap, and so did Guest, McKean, and Shearer, who will all reprise their respective roles as members of the legendary fictitious band Spinal Tap. Joining the cast this time around are Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Paul Shaffer, Fran Drescher, Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, and Chris Addison. Reiner will also reprise his role as documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi from the original film.

In a statement, Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen and Bleecker Street President Kent Sanderson had this to say, “We feel privileged for the opportunity to work with Rob Reiner and the brilliant minds behind the original This Is Spinal Tap, and to be part of a film that has resonated with so many. This Is Spinal Tap isn’t just a movie—it’s a cultural touchstone that pioneered the mockumentary genre and left an indelible mark on both film and music. Returning to this world through Spinal Tap II is an extraordinary chance to celebrate its legacy while creating something fresh for both new and devoted audiences.”

Additionally, Reiner said the following, “So happy to be working with the folks at Bleecker Street who are passionate about keeping Tap’s legacy alive and happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevancy.”

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will be released exclusively in theatres on September 12. Watch the teaser announcement below:
