First and foremost, Happy New Year! Here’s hoping that 2025 treats you and your loved ones well. As we wait for the 2025 slate of films to begin next week with Christian Gudegast‘s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, this New Year’s weekend was marked with the surprising legs of Barry Jenkins‘ Mufasa: The Lion King.
The film slowly and steadily climbed to the top spot of the box office this weekend, with a $23.8 million tally, and has so far grossed over $476.4 million globally. Perhaps it may not produce the same commercial success as Jon Favreau’s film, but it will certainly leg much further as the newer, “bigger” blockbusters are still a few weeks away.
As for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the overall franchise has crossed $1 billion this weekend, with the film raking in $21.2 million in theatres and making over $336 million globally. That’s a bit lower than Mufasa, which started out trailing behind Sonic but has now completely taken the throne as the Christmas Corridor’s most commercially viable film.
Nosferatu also broke a significant record, making over $100 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. This weekend, Robert Eggers‘ reimagining of Bram Stoker‘s Dracula added a $13.2 million domestic tally to its global score, which now makes it Focus’ fourth highest-grossing movie of all time! Perhaps it could even get higher on the list when its theatrical run ends as Awards season begins to ramp up, and more contenders will make their way to more areas after many of them snag some statues at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards very soon!
