New Trailer for ‘The Piano Lesson’ Drops One Week Before Netflix Premiere

The latest trailer for The Piano Lesson has been released. Written and directed by Malcolm Washington, and co-written by Virgil Williams, the movie is based on August Wilson‘s play of the same name and stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, Skylar Aleece Smith, Jerrika Hinton, Gail Bean, Danielle Deadwyler, and Corey Hawkins.

Here is the plot synopsis:

“A battle is brewing in the Charles Household. At the center stands a prized heirloom piano tearing two siblings apart. On one side, a brother (John David Washington) plans to build the family fortune by selling it. On the other, a sister (Danielle Deadwyler) will go to any lengths to hold onto the sole vestige of the family’s heritage. Their uncle (Samuel L. Jackson) tries to mediate, but even he can’t hold back the ghosts of the past.

Adapted from August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork, THE PIANO LESSON explores the intergenerational dynamics of identity, resilience and transcendence – revealing startling truths about how we perceive the past and who gets to define our legacy.”

Our editor-in-chief, Joey Magidson, was among one of the people who had a chance to see the movie at the Telluride Film Festival, and states that “The Piano Lesson doesn’t fully escape its stage origins, visually, and a move towards the supernatural feels silly, but the central performances are often mesmerizing, with one in particular absolutely stealing the show. The reverence to the source material cuts both ways, giving lots of good material to play with, but also a slightly bloated feel. So, while this is a mixed bag at times, there’s more good than not here.” You can read his full review of the movie here.

You can check out the full trailer below and finally see the movie on Netflix this Friday!
