Emilia Pérez is going to be an across the board Oscar contender this season, though one question was about its candidacy in Best International Feature. Would France select it as its submission? Last year, they didn’t choose Anatomy of a Fall, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, while scoring Best Picture and Best Director nominations in the process. Would the same thing happen again this year? Apparently not.
According to Variety, France has chosen Emilia Pérez over All We Imagine as Light, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Misericordia. Jacques Audiard’s film now is easily the frontrunner in the Oscar category, given how it has played at the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival. Our own Joey Magidson saw it at Telluride and reviewed it here, and the cast, led by Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Selena Gomez, should be players as well, so this is a potential big awards contender. Stay tuned for more.

Feels… weird, and kind of uncomfortable, that a movie taking place in Mexico, presented in an aesthetic unique to Mexico (the telenovela), that centers at least one hot-button issue associated with Mexico (cartel violence), is representing a different country over 5,000 miles away.
I did wonder if Mexico would have it as their selection, but it seems like Audiard being the auteur ruled the day?
