It isn’t every day that a trailer picks out bad reviews from the director’s body of work to promote his latest installment, but the newest trailer for Megalopolis does precisely that. Spanning through the career of director Francis Ford Coppola‘s movies, the trailer showcases how many critics did not like some of his most-known films, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, when they were released. It may seem like an odd marketing strategy, but it could also be the best possible way to gauge interest in the movie after some rather middling reviews it received from its Cannes premiere.
Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis stars Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.
Here is the plot synopsis:
“MEGALOPOLIS is a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.”
