Interview: ‘War Game’ Filmmakers Tony Gerber and Jesse Moss Discuss Getting This Documentary Made

War Game is as much a thriller as it is a documentary. Filmmakers Tony Gerber and Jesse Moss are able to showcase a political exercise with excitement as well as knowledge. It all makes for a doc that enthralled me, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to go over it with them. I previously spoke to Moss here about Girls State alongside Amanda McBain. Today, Moss is joined by Gerber to talk War Game.

In my review of the documentary here, I had the following to say about Gerber and Moss:

Directors Tony Gerber and Jesse Moss lucked into some very compelling players, but the filmmakers just step back after helping set the game, observing how the scenario would play out. They set it up so it both feels like watching actors in a thriller as well as actual officials grappling with the worst day possible. There’s a soft touch here, boosted by strong editing and smooth pacing. Gerber and Moss make War Game thrilling, without question, but they never paper over the potential stakes.

Below, you can see my conversation with Gerber and Moss. We discuss how the movie came to be, how they lucked into players like Steve Bullock as their fictional President, and lots more. They were clearly intending for the film to hit in the way that it hit me, so there’s an ease to the chat. War Game is absolutely captivating, but it’s essential as well, so this is a must see documentary that could actually do some good. It hits theaters this weekend, so don’t miss it…
