The documentary War Game is many things, but chief among them is a call to action. Put into place in part by CEO of Vet Voice Foundation Janessa Goldbeck, the hope is to show how the worst case scenario of another January 6th can be avoided, while also putting forth the potential for a stronger and more united countey. Goldbeck’s organization empowers veterans to become civic leaders and to have a voice in the discourse. War Game is a perfect example of this, as many a veteran participated in the exercise. Earlier in the week, I spoke to filmmakers Tony Gerber and Jesse Moss here about the doc. Today, it’s Goldbeck’s turn.
In my review of the documentary here, I had the following to say:
Nobody needs to be reminded of what it was like on January 6th, 2021. A violent insurrection attempted to prevent the peaceful certification of a presidential election. It was awful. However, it could have been way worse. So, how do those responsible for making sure that never happens prepare for the worst case scenarios. Well, they simulate it and practice. The new documentary War Game gives us a front row seat to one such exercise, with riveting results.
War Game is a captivating look at what might happen during a pivotal six hours in American democracy. Seeing another insurrection play out from all ends is illuminating not just in terms of the how, but the why as well. We see many a serious conversation about the pros and cons of a given action. If this is an accurate look at how our leaders handle a crisis, it’s possible we’re in better hands than it seems sometimes.
Below, you can hear my discussion with Goldbeck. I was very curious to hear about putting the exercise together, as it takes a very specific touch in order to have it work. We also get into what having an actual film made of the game feels like. She’s very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the subject, but also very easy to talk to and quick to find common ground. It’s a wonderful back and forth for a wonderful documentary. War Game is in theaters now and is a must see!
