Interview: ‘Girls State’ Filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss Detail What Makes This Project So Affecting

After Boys State, I was ready for any project that documentary filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss had up their sleeves. What followed was Mayor Pete (reviewed here) and The Mission, but now we have Girls State, which feels like the most important work of their careers so far. So, it was a pleasure to speak with them earlier on this week about the film. Today, that conversation comes your way, just as the doc is hitting Apple TV+ for your viewing pleasure.

In my review of Girls State (here), I had the following to say about McBaine and Moss:

Filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss do an excellent job making sure this doesn’t come off as a sequel or spinoff in any manner. Girls State stands alone, especially considering how the girls are almost 100% inspiring. The boys last time ran the gamut, with the ones at the other camp looking far more ominous in this movie. McBaine and Moss have the right girls to focus on, let them soar, and reap the benefits. It’s impeccable documentary filmmaking.

Below, you can hear my chat with McBaine and Moss. I had just seen the movie, so I was still high on its power, though I did begin by showing them a promotional Boys State button I was sent. They really got a kick out of it, too. As for Girls State, I was fascinated by how they made it so different, which they were happy to discuss. It’s a really good back and forth, befitting the great documentary they made. It’s one not to miss!
