Sunday Scaries Interview: ‘In a Violent Nature’ Filmmaker Chris Nash Chats About His Incredibly Original Slasher Flick

A debut horror film can often be a calling card for a director. In the case of In a Violent Nature and filmmaker Chris Nash, this is one hell of a calling card. In taking a very independent minded style and applying it to a slasher flick, the end result is enrapturing. The movie is one of my favorites of the year, regardless of genre, so I was delighted to get on Zoom with him recently to talk about it. Today,I present our chat to you as a Sunday Scaries interview!

In my review here, I had the following to say about Nash’s filmmaking:

Filmmaker Chris Nash deserves a ton of credit for following the beats of not just a slasher, but also of independent cinema, crafting something one of a kind along the way. Long takes, unusual perspective shots, and deliberate pacing suggest indie film, or even slow cinema, but then he’ll also mix in some wildly brutal and inventive kills. The deaths alternate between quiet and restrained, all the way to just incredibly gory, so Nash is doing it all with a purpose. In a Violent Nature is the sort of feature debut that suggests a very bright future. I can’t wait to see what Nash does next. He’s got the goods!

Below, you can hear my conversation with Nash. I wanted to hear about the hows and whys of this film coming to be, considering it’s such a simple and elegant idea, especially for horror. He seemed very delighted to hear how taken I was by the flick, and it led to some interesting discussion topics. In a Violent Nature is out now, so don’t you dare miss it!
