Joseph Gordon-Levitt has long been an actor I always enjoy. When I interviewed him here for Mr. Corman, I said the following: “I’ve loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt, both in front of and behind the camera, for years now. His acting has compelled me since 3rd Rock from the Sun, with Brick and Mysterious Skin really breaking him through, film-wise. Of course, (500) Days of Summer and 50/50 are hallmarks as well. Then, as a filmmaker, his directorial debut Don Jon is an underrated gem.” So, it’s clear that I appreciate his work, which I hope came out in that first conversation. Now, he returns to talk Flora and Son with me. I previously discussed the film with writer/director John Carney here. Today, it’s Gordon-Levitt’s turn, with Eve Hewson to come tomorrow!
In my rave review of Flora and Son out of TIFF (found here), I had this to say about JGL’s work:
Eve Hewson is terrific here, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt is perfectly utilized. The pair have great chemistry, with Carney deploying JGL just the right amount. Hewson is the star and it’s a real breakthrough performance. Her hardness and cleverness mix with her good heart, making Flora someone to really root for.
Below, you can see my chat with Gordon-Levitt. We discuss the creative spirit of this movie, which seems very kindred with his HitRecord online media company. You can tell the passion that he has for this flick, which I happen to share, considering it’s one of my favorites of the year. We have a pretty good time here, I think, so hopefully that comes off in the discussion. If you haven’t seen Flora and Son yet, you should do yourself a favor and fire it up on Apple TV+ as soon as you can. It’s just an utter delight…
Here now is my interview with Flora and Son co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Enjoy:
Flora and Son is streaming on Apple TV+ right now!
