Interview: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Discusses the Journey to Directing Again with ‘Mr. Corman’

Apple TV+

I’ve loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt, both in front of and behind the camera, for years now. His acting has compelled me since 3rd Rock from the Sun, with Brick and Mysterious Skin really breaking him through, film-wise. Of course, (500) Days of Summer and 50/50 are hallmarks as well. Then, as a filmmaker, his directorial debut Don Jon is an underrated gem. Since then, it’s been quite the wait for Gordon-Levitt to write and direct more. He’s remained an in-demand actor, but JGL the storyteller has been more limited to his HitRecord online media company. However, that changed this year, and specifically today, as Mr. Corman debuts on Apple TV+. In support of that drop, I was recently given a brief bit of time to hop on a video chat with him to chat about the project. The audio of that conversation can be found below.

Next, you can hear my discussion with Gordon-Levitt. We were limited, time-wise, but I feel like we got some good stuff in. Mr. Corman is, unsurprisingly, a prime topic, but I made sure to bring up Don Jon a bit right at the start. Mostly, I wanted to focus on his filmmaking, and in particular, the journey to making something after his writing and directing debut. It’s a fascinating back and forth, even if he’s doing far more of the interesting talking than I am, to be sure. As for Mr. Corman, it’s a challenging yet really compelling show, walking the line between comedy and drama. It’s going to prove divisive, but I enjoyed it more than most. Definitely give that show a look on Apple TV+ before or after listening to this. It’s worth checking out…

Here now is my interview with Mr. Corman creator Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Enjoy:
