Anyone who watches Flora and Son (which, to be clear, should be all of you), is undoubtedly going to be blown away by Eve Hewson. She gives not just a breakthrough performance, but a star-making turn that ranks as one of my very favorites of the year. Plus, when first saw the film, I wasn’t even aware of her famous lineage, so she was just an exciting new actress to me. All this meant that a chat with her was a must once the strike ended. I spoke to writer/director John Carney here about the movie earlier in the season, while just yesterday, Joseph Gordon-Levitt returned to chat here. Today, it’s Hewson’s turn to talk Flora and Son!
In my rave review of Flora and Son out of TIFF (found here), I had this to say about Hewson’s performance:
Eve Hewson is terrific here, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt is perfectly utilized. The pair have great chemistry, with Carney deploying JGL just the right amount. Hewson is the star and it’s a real breakthrough performance. Her hardness and cleverness mix with her good heart, making Flora someone to really root for.
Below, you can see my conversation with Hewson. We talk a lot about the music in Flora and Son, which she helped write. Figuring out how to craft a song that’s catchy but not too good, fitting her character, absolutely fascinated me. She’s absolutely lovely and we got on well, so it’s a very nice little chat. As good as this discussion is, the film is even better, so if you somehow have not given it a look on Apple TV+ yet, you really need to get on that ASAP…
