First Images Of ‘Rebel Moon’ Gives A Glimpse at Zack Snyder’s Latest Movie

Zack Snyder‘s Rebel Moon is arguably Netflix’s biggest production of 2023. Set to launch a brand-new cinematic universe akin to what Snyder is currently doing with Army of the Dead (after two feature films, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, an animated series, is also in the works). Now, Netflix has released first-look images that give audiences a first glimpse of what Snyder dubs as his version of Star Wars.

Netflix is so confident about the project that they have already greenlit the sequel to Rebel Moon, which was scheduled to be shot back-to-back. Written by Snyder, Shay Hatten, and Kurt Johnstad, the film boasts an all-star cast comprised of Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Staz Nair, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, E. Duffy, Anthony Hopkins, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, and Fra Fee.

Snyder is planning to release two versions of Rebel Moon. The original cut will release in theatres sometime in the fall and on Netflix on December 22, while an R-rated extended cut will be released later down the line, possibly in 2024. This is a recurring theme with Snyder, who has released extended cuts of Watchmen, an R-rated 3-hour cut of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the infamous Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which was released on HBO Max after many years of outcry from fans.

From a press release, here is the plot synopsis:

“From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.”
