Awards Radar Community: What Is Your Favorite Baseball Movie?

Moneyball (2011) Cinematography by Wally Pfister
Little Big League

Baseball is back! Opening Day was this Thursday, and while baseball isn’t as ubiquitously beloved a sport as it used to be, it’s still wildly popular and close to a national holiday. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the New York Mets, considering I recently went to Mets Fantasy Camp (detailed here and here). So, why not tie it into this weekend’s Awards Radar Community Question? So, I’m keeping it simple and just asking the obvious question. Which baseball heavy films are your favorite?

Are you a Moneyball fan? That would be the Oscar-centric title to pick, followed closely by A League of Their Own. There’s also the Kevin Costner trilogy of Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, and For Love of the Game. Maybe you prefer something lighter, like The Sandlot? Or, there’s wish fulfillment like Little Big League or Rookie of the Year? Hell, there’s sports biopic options, too, like 42, Pride of the Yankees or The Rookie. Frankly, there’s no shortage of options, which may be surprising, since baseball doesn’t get its cinematic due these days.

The choice is now yours. Which of the aforementioned baseball flicks do you like best? Do you prefer a different one than my suggestions? Whatever your take is, we’re all ears. So, play ball, chime in, and enjoy the season…

Bull Durham for sure. Easily the best-written sports movie of my lifetime (maybe ever?).
