In a surprising move, Variety has reported that actress Michelle Williams will be competing for a Best Actress Oscar nomination as opposed to a Best Supporting one for her role as Mitzi Fabelman in Steven Spielberg‘s The Fabelmans.
Williams was presumed to be the supporting frontrunner for the nomination, and possible win, but the tables have now turned. Other frontrunners in that category included Claire Foy and Jessie Buckley for Sarah Polley‘s Women Talking.
It’s still unclear who the Lead Actress frontrunner could be this year, but possible players include Cate Blanchett (Tar), Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once), and Margot Robbie (Babylon).

Ridiculous tactical move. Makes no sense! She was guaranteed the Supporting Actress Oscar and now she’s going to throw it away! There is absolutely no way whatsoever she’ll win over the locked-in frontrunners for Best Lead Actress!
Oh, wait… shoot, sorry. I mistakenly commented on this article instead of the one announcing that Olivia Colman will campaign as a lead role in The Favourite.
Well played. I do think she went from an almost sure thing winner to probably locked in a tight race, but she can definitely still win.
