Chris Rock Rejected the Opportunity to Host Next Year’s Academy Awards

Chris Rock has turned down the opportunity to host next year’s Academy Awards. The comedian revealed he turned down the offer during a recent live performance. Rock has been surrounded by controversy alongside Will Smith, ever since during this year’s ceremony, Smith slapped Rock on stage after the South Carolina comedian made a joke at the expense of the King Richard star’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

The incident brought severe consequences to Smith’s career and reputation in Hollywood. The actor had to resign his membership to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, due to the organization suggesting they would ban him for at least a decade. Nevertheless, Smith has been banned from the Oscars ceremony and other Academy-related events for ten years.

Besides the sanctions from the Academy, most of the projects which Smith had in development were put on indefinite hold or were completely canceled. The list of these projects included the Netflix film Fast and Loose, and a fourth movie in the Bad Boys franchise for Sony Pictures, while the release of the Apple film Emancipation is in limbo.

The 2023 Academy Awards Ceremony will take place on March 12th, 2023, in its traditional location of the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California. The Oscar season remains a few months away, so we’ll have to wait to find out who is actually hosting the ceremony eventually.
