As Sam Mendes‘ four-part The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event continues production, Sony is mulling over its release plans for what could be the most ambitious release of any major studio movie in the contemporary era.
For those unaware, Mendes is making four movies about The Beatles, each centered on a member of the group: John Lennon (Harris Dickinson), Paul McCartney (Paul Mescal), George Harrison (Joseph Quinn), and Ringo Starr (Barry Keoghan).
All of them are slated for release in 2028, and The Hollywood Reporter now says the studio plans to release them all on the same day. Plans are still in flux, but this comes after producer Pippa Harris explained the upcoming strategy during a keynote session at the BFI London Film Festival:
“We want people to be able to experience them in the cinema at the same time, during the same period. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re thinking that people will go and see all four films on the same day. But within the same month, you might see one a week, or you might see one film one weekend and another the next.”
Sony is also considering lumping all the films’ box office tallies together instead of reporting them separately, which could prevent any discussion of which entry is the most financially profitable or popular. The studio is also offering the option to buy a four-pack of tickets to see all the films in the cinema instead of cherry-picking one or two entries.
If all four films release on the same day, which is still unconfirmed, Sony might not encourage audiences to see them in a specific order, and there will be no “right” way to watch them all.
Beyond the Fab Four, the films boast an all-star cast including Anna Sawai, Saoirse Ronan, Mia McKenna-Bruce, Aimee Lou Wood, James Norton, Harry Lloyd, Adam Pally, Lucy Boynton, Farhan Akhtar, Morfydd Clark, Harry Lawtey, and Ben Schwartz. More details to come soon!
