Interview: Patton Oswalt Discusses His Taste in Film, Good Interview Technique, and ‘I Love My Dad’

Patton Oswalt is not just a top-tier comedian, though he certainly is that. He’s also a deeply underrated actor. Just watch him in Big Fan and Young Adult, for example, as both are nomination caliber performances. He adds another one to his ledger with I Love My Dad, a cringe comedy with heart. If that sounds like something only Oswalt could make work, you’re not wrong. So, when the opportunity arose to talk with him, I was all about it. Luckily, now I also know that he’s an even better human being than an actor or comedian, which is really saying something. This was, without question, one of the better chats I’ve had in some time, and Oswalt was largely responsible for that. So, I’m eager to share this one with you all!

In my review of I Love My Dad (found here), I raved about Oswalt like so:

Patton Oswalt excels in this sort of a role. Big Fan and Young Adult showed how great he is in tough parts, and this is just more evidence. He’s unafraid to be equal parts unlikeable and sympathetic. Truly, it’s a role few could play.

Below, you can see my chat with Oswalt. We obviously talk a bit about his new film I Love My Dad, but I was as curious about how he picks his movies in general. Of course, that in turn led to plenty of other detours, including the technique of interviews, making for an incredible discussion. He’s a lovely human being and this shows that, without question. His work in I Love My Dad more than sells it, but hopefully this talk adds to that…
