One day before the Oscars are set to air on ABC, it was announced that tick, tick…BOOM! filmmaker Lin-Manuel Miranda is not going to attend the ceremony, as his wife has tested positive for COVID-19. Currently, Miranda has tested negative, but since he was in contact with his wife and kids, they will self-isolate out of an abundance of caution.

The Omicron variant is still spreading amongst the population, with the BA.2 sub-variant causing a new surge around the world. The United States won’t escape this new surge of cases, and the Academy has already responded to the potential threat of BA.2 by tightening its COVID protocols ahead of the ceremony. New protocols now establish that “those who tested positive for COVID-19 and are within a zero to five-day window from the date of their first positive test are not permitted to attend under any circumstances.”
