Suzanna Son is going to be a star. That much is just clear to see when you watch Red Rocket. As amazing as Simon Rex is, and he’s truly amazing, Son goes toe to toe with him in all of their scenes. That she isn’t getting quite the Oscar attention that he is, well, that’s a shame. Both should be nominated, plain and simple. This week is Red Rocket week on the site, featuring interviews with everyone involved. So far, we’ve had co-star Bree Elrod (here) and co-writer Chris Bergoch (here), but now, it’s Son’s turn. After having very briefly interacted with her before a screening event a few months ago, now we had some time to get down to brass tacks.
My rave review of Red Rocket (found here) praises her performance like so:
Also doing excellent work is Suzanna Son, who plays her character as worlds away from a babe in the woods. She’s just as compelling as Rex, suggesting a very bright future. Son is charming, funny, sexy, and smarter than she lets on. It’s a phenomenal turn.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Son. Being as blown away by her performance in Red Rocket as I am, it was fascinating to get to hear her perspective on it. Of course, everyone already knows how she was the latest Sean Baker discovery out in the wild, but there’s much more to her than that. This chat proves that, without a doubt. Plus, it should just be more evidence that the film is a must see. My favorite work of 2021, Son is a big part of that. Truly, the movie wouldn’t exist without her. Don’t miss the flick when it opens this weekend, and enjoy our discussion!
