Russell T. Davies Returns as ‘Doctor Who’ Showrunner for 60th Anniversary

After a tumultuous era for fans with Chris Chibnall as showrunner, Doctor Who is returning to the revival’s roots with Russell T Davies returning.

Davies worked on the first four series of the show left in 2009 to pursue other projects. As a lifelong fan of the show, his reboot was able to create new interest in the show. Beyond its original cult status, his writing and direction helped to solidify actors that have played ‘the Doctor’ as stars. It is unclear if the 60th anniversary will feature Davies’ Doctors’ David Tennant or Christopher Eccleston.

Though it is unclear if his return extends only to the 60th anniversary specials, his return is welcome given his popular time as showrunner in the early 2000s.

Series 13 and Chibnall’s final series starring Jodie Whittaker, is set for release in 2022. The specials written by Davies should premiere throughout 2023. BBC Studios is partnering with Bad Wolf to produce.
