Interview: Mark Duplass Chats About ‘Language Lessons’ and More!

Mark Duplass is about as interesting as a guy gets. Not only does he, along with his brother Jay, have a successful filmmaking career, he’s a top notch actor. Duplass just has impeccable taste, really, with his movie Language Lessons, co-written by co-star and director Natalie Morales, just the most recent example. Whether he’s acting, directing, producing, writing, or all of the above, his presence is a mark of quality. So, getting to interview him was an absolute pleasure. After recently interviewing Jay Duplass (here) and talking some Duplass Brothers productions with him, it was pretty cool to talk to Mark about it as well. Today, I bring that chat to you all.

In my review of Language Lessons out of SXSW, I praised Duplass like so:

Both Mark Duplass and Natalie Morales are excellent, though the former is doing something special. Duplass crafts a deeply sad but thoroughly pleasant individual, someone who you just want to hug. Plus, he finds the perfect balance of conversational Spanish to engage in. The bilingual turn deserves some awards contention as the year progresses. The right campaign could find some traction for him. Morales is no slouch, either, adding layers to her character as things develop. Together, they become one of the more enjoyable screen pairings of the year so far, birthing a friendship you don’t want to see end.

Below, you can see my conversation with Duplass. We keep bringing the conversation back to Language Lessons, as you might expect, but we also branch off in several directions. He’s just such a fascinating guy, it happens naturally. Not only is it great to talk about such a strong film, he’s just a dude with a lot to say. Plus, he’s about as casual and intimate as it gets. This really was a treat. In all honesty, I would say that this is one of my favorite interviews that I’ve ever done. So, I’m thrilled to share it with you all now…
