First teased back in 2014, initially scheduled to release as one of the big Christmas Day films of 2020, and now finally (hopefully) coming out for Christmas 2021, we now have our first official look at the new West Side Story.
Getting a massively hyped release during the 93rd Oscars telecast tonight, audiences received their first tease of what to expect from Steven Spielberg’s new iteration of the beloved property.
An Oscars-targeted trailer release is an appropriate strategy for the film, as the previous 1961 iteration from directors Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins won the award for Best Picture five decades ago.
Surely Amblin and 20th Century Studios hopes to do the same for this new take, which Spielberg has said hews closer to the Broadway script than the 1961 version of the story.
Spielberg collaborator and stage legend Tony Kushner wrote the script for the film, which stars Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort (probably not the studio’s favorite fact these days) in the leading roles of star-crossed lovers Maria and Tony.
Also in the film are Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Ben Cook, Corey Still, Brian d’Arcy James, and none other than Rita Moreno, who won her own Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the 1961 film.
West Side Story is set to release in theaters on December 10, 2021. Check out the trailer below:
