Awards Radar Community: What Are Your Favorite Surprises of the Oscar Season?

Folks, the Academy Awards are in exactly seven days. Crazy, right? There’s basically nothing left to do but wait. As previously mentioned, members of the Academy are currently voting, so there’s that. However, as fans of Oscar season, and perhaps even addicts, we always need a hit, right? So, today, for our latest Awards Radar Community post, we’re asking a question of you all. What question, you may retort? Well, we want to know what your favorite surprises have been during the Oscar season. We all have them, so now is the perfect time to make them known here. You know you want to…

For many, it will obviously be the unpredictability of the Best Actress race this year. We’ve covered it plenty, here and here, specifically, but it’s an all-timer. While we wait to see if Viola Davis, Frances McDormand, or Carey Mulligan win that Oscar, there’s also the surprise of how well Sound of Metal has done in the technical categories. Those are just a few of the surprises that we’ve seen this year. On the flip-side, the relative indifferent that the Academy met Tenet with is certainly not what many expected a year ago. These are just part of the tip of the iceberg for 2020/2021, too.

It doesn’t just have to be this year, friends. Oscar history has plenty of awards season surprises. Whether it’s a snub on nomination morning, a surprise win during the ceremony, or a twist in the precursor phase, surprises happen. So, hit us up with some of your choice ones. We’re a week out from the Academy Awards, so why not pass the time with some fond memories?

Let us know your favorite surprises of the Oscar season in the comments section!
