Oftentimes, the Oscar season will see a new star or two break out and their careers will skyrocket with the attention granted to them from the increased exposure to the world. Whether they’ve been in the business for a while or just emerging in Hollywood, there’s a clear line in their careers between their first Oscar nomination (or win) and after.
This certainly seems to be what’s happening with Maria Bakalova, the star of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, someone who most people hadn’t heard of this time last year and is now an Oscar nominee and potential winner for her work in the comedy.
It was recently announced that Bakalova will be part of the ensemble cast for Judd Apatow’s pandemic comedy The Bubble, and now she’s got another big role lined up on a very different kind of project.
Deadline is reporting that Bakalova and Amandla Stenberg are set to star in a new thriller from A24 titled Bodies, Bodies, Bodies.
There’s a lot of mystery surrounding the new film, as plot details are being strictly guarded, with insiders describing the project as a “secret slasher film”.
Alongside Bakalova and Stenberg, Pete Davidson and Myha’la Herrold are in negotiations to star in the film, which will be directed by Halina Reijn.
Reijn is a Dutch actress whose directorial debut, Instinct, was selected as the Dutch entry for Best International Feature Film at last year’s Oscars, although it wasn’t ultimately chosen as one of the five films nominated.
The mystery surrounding this project will certainly keep people guessing, but one thing is for certain – we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Maria Bakalova in the future.
