Interview: Casey Affleck Muses on his Career and ‘The World to Come’

Even with an Academy Award under his belt, Casey Affleck is continually underrated. His turn in Manchester by the Sea is, no hyperbole, one of the best acting performances I’ve ever seen. To call his Oscar a deserved one is damning with faint praise. I’ve actually been keen to interview Affleck for years, so while I just missed the chance for Our Friend this year, it did work out for The World to Come. Affleck’s work over the past few months has been complex and moving, continuing to showcase his strong skillset, as seen in my review of his newest flick (found here). Over the phone a few days ago, I straight up told him as much.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Casey Affleck. I was thrilled to have him on the phone, and he was generous with his time, as well as willing to talk about anything. Moreover, he even seemed to be caught a little off-guard by some of my highest praises. He’s very candid about how he feels about some of his earliest work, so that was interesting to hear, especially as I was probably praising some of the same films. Still, he seemed touched by the words, happy to have spent the time, and at he conclusion of the talk, genuinely pleased. If you’re looking for a glimpse inside of his head, this is a great start…

Here now is my chat with The World to Come co-star Casey Affleck. Enjoy:
