Joey’s Home Movies For the Week of January 25th – ‘Synchronic’ Leads the Way

Welcome back to my Home Movies! Today, we have another small slate, with the science fiction flick Synchronic leading the way. What else is hitting shelves? Perhaps a new Criterion Collection release? Read on to find out…

Joey’s Top Pick

Well Go USA

Synchronic

Jamie Dornan and Anthony Mackie star in Synchronic, a sci-fi flick that continues to show filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have insane potential. Benson and Moorhead do some really interesting things with genre, and this is no exception. Paramedics dealing with a potentially bizarre new drug offers untold potential for enterprising storytellers, so the skeleton here is sturdy. Buoyed by Dornan and Mackie, this is a sometimes silly but always fun movie. If it looks like something you might enjoy, it’s well worth checking out. Especially this week, it’s the clear cut top pick, that’s for sure.

The Ascent

From The Criterion Collection: “The crowning triumph of a career cut tragically short, Larisa Shepitko’s final film won the Golden Bear at the 1977 Berlin Film Festival and went on to be hailed as one of the finest works of late Soviet cinema. In the darkest days of World War II, two partisans set out for supplies to sustain their beleaguered outfit, braving the blizzard-swept landscape of Nazi-occupied Belarus. When they fall into the hands of German forces and come face-to-face with death, each must choose between martyrdom and betrayal, in a spiritual ordeal that lifts the film’s earthy drama to the plane of religious allegory. With stark, visceral cinematography that pits blinding white snow against pitch-black despair, The Ascent finds poetry and transcendence in the harrowing trials of war.”
