The Trial of the Chicago 7 is the big winner today from the Denver Film Critics Society, hoping that the win could give them a little boost to start making a move to overtake current frontrunners like Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland. Aaron Sorkin’s courtroom drama had a strong showing all around, also picking up wins in Original Screenplay for Sorkin, and Best Supporting Actor for Sacha Baron Cohen.
Zhao shows no signs of slowing down though, as the filmmaker once again picked up the win for Best Director. Does anyone even have a fighting shot against her? Looking at the critic’s groups, it doesn’t seem likely. However, a narrative forms every year from the critic’s groups and things can change pretty drastically once the other awards bodies start doling out their awards. Nothing is set in stone yet.
