Interview: John Magaro Talks ‘First Cow’ and Acting During COVID

Among the many actors who don’t get enough credit in Hollywood, John Magaro is chief among them. Whether it’s the films he chooses to act in, his performances within them, or just his overall vibe, Magaro is consistently doing work that deserves more acclaim. That goes double for some under-seen gems like Liberal Arts and Not Fade Away. This year finally saw the actor feted more than usual for his performance in Kelly Reichardt‘s indie favorite First Cow, which even has him on the awards trail. As such, I was thrilled to get the chance to speak with him a few weeks ago. Having chatted with him several times over the last handful of years, it was almost like meeting up with a fond acquaintance. In times like this, that’s not nothing, either. As with all 2020 things, you take a small win where you can get it.

Below is my conversation with Magaro, which focused on far more than just his strong turn in First Cow. The movie itself gets some time during the interview, but we just had a nice discussion. His new parenthood is discussed, as is what it was like to return to acting in the midst of the pandemic to finish shooting The Many Saints of Newark. Those are just some of the topics discussed. It’s a nice little talk, so I hope you enjoy it. Magaro is a great guy, and I’m certain it comes of here…
