We have just learned that Chloé Zhao’s latest film, Nomadland has taken home the coveted People’s Choice Award at this years Toronto International Film Festival. Nomadland joins some elite company, such as Jojo Rabbit (Best Picture nominee), Green Book (Best Picture winner), Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Best Picture nominee), La La Land (Best Picture nominee), Room (Best Picture nominee), The Imitation Game (Best Picture nominee), 12 Years a Slave (Best Picture nominee), Silver Linings Playbook (Best Picture nominee), Where Do We Go Now?, and The King’s Speech (Best Picture winner).
So with the exception of Where Do We Go Now?, every single audience award winner at TIFF went on to either get a nomination for Best Picture at the Oscars, or actually win it. In fact, every single one of those audience winners (with the exception of Where Do We Go Now?) went on to win at least one Oscar. So assuming that trend sticks, we are looking at a serious contender with Nomadland.
With this win, Nomadland has already earned itself:
• People’s Choice Award: Toronto International Film Festival
• Golden Lion: Venice Film Festival
• Fair Play Cinema Award: Venice Film Festival
• SIGNIS Award – Honorable Mention: Venice Film Festival
This is just the beginning for Nomadland, and also marks the beginning to what should be a very exciting and memorable awards season.
