It’s a relatively less eventful Fourth of July weekend at the box office than just a few years ago, when Minions: The Rise of Gru took cinemas by storm, and a TikTok movement propelled the film to a record-setting $107 million opening. In comparison, Minions & Monsters, while more positively reviewed than previous installments of the Despicable Me franchise, didn’t land with the same impact.
The Pierre Coffin-directed movie opened with $36.4 million domestically over the three-day weekend, with the five-day total reaching $61.4 million. Globally, the movie opened to $160 million, which isn’t bad but is definitely not what Illumination expected, especially after another incredible success with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and considering that Despicable Me 4 made over $986 million worldwide.
Toy Story 5 is still raking in amazing business as the animated movie of the moment, and is well on the way to cross the $1 billion threshold with a $764 million global tally in its third weekend. On the other hand, Supergirl has completely crashed and burned, dropping 74% from its previous weekend and is likely eyeing a $140 million global finish. This isn’t the start James Gunn‘s new DCU had hoped for, but the next few projects in the pipeline, both in film and television, seem to be generating some excitement from audiences, both on and off the internet. There may be hope after all!
However, the movie was beaten this weekend by Young Washington, Angel Studios’ splashy Independence Day release, which snagged $20.8 million domestically despite mixed reviews. The movie already has a sequel in the works, 1776, after the Jon Erwin-directed biopic on U.S. President George Washington’s early days, during the French and Indian War, shattered all expectations.
There may not be much more movement next week, as this month doesn’t have as many new releases as May and June, but do keep an eye out for the year’s two biggest blockbusters, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as they are about to become massive juggernauts and likely propel the box office to even healthier heights than it is today after many difficult and tumultuous years.
