Will Christopher Nolan Repeat His ‘Oppenheimer’ Success With ‘The Odyssey’ This Year?

Christopher Nolan’s next film is set to hit screens this summer, with a lot of hype around his adaptation of The Odyssey. This is coming on the back of his most successful film ever, with Oppenheimer dominating both the box office and the most prestigious awards ceremonies.

Nolan finally picked up the Academy Award for Best Director for the 2024 film, which also won Best Picture. Now, he’ll be looking to improve on that success with his Ancient Greek epic.

The Odyssey Has Huge Blockbuster Potential

Few could have anticipated that Oppenheimer would be the box office smash that it was, raking in just shy of $1 billion worldwide. Expectations are much higher for The Odyssey, though, with projections already suggesting it could break the $100 million mark on its first weekend in North America alone.

Ever since the Batman trilogy and Inception, the filmmaker has shown his talent in delivering large-scale spectacle. His next film could balance that alongside the emotional weight of Odysseus’s story; there’s a strong chance that this film will be nominated for several accolades as well.  

The big challenge for Nolan is that The Odyssey isn’t a traditional awards-season drama. The fact that it’s a mythological adventure with various fantasy elements may make it harder for the powers that be to take it seriously.
