Bobby Farrelly, both on his own and with his brother Peter Farrelly, has managed to make a career out of big-hearted comedy. The Farrelly Brothers certainly got raunchy at times, but the affection they had for their characters was always in evidence. Now, working apart, Bobby has certainly taken on that ethos, with Driver’s Ed the purest version of that yet. Earlier this week, I had the chance to discuss the film with him, as well as his career in comedy. With the flick about to hit theaters, that conversation comes your way today.
In my review of the movie here, I had the following to say about Farrelly’s direction:
Director Bobby Farrelly takes the screenplay by Thomas Moffett and balances out the coming of age tale with the broad comedy. At times, Driver’s Ed is very silly, though when it gets heartfelt, the emotions feel real. At 98 minutes, the pacing is strong, knowing when we need to check back in with Nanjiani and Shannon, though always keeping the focus on Nivola and company. Farrelly hit on the right lead for his film, with the results speaking for themselves.
Below, you can hear my chat with Farrelly. Not only was I eager to chat about the charm and heart of the film, Bobby seemed quite pleased to receive these words. We do touch on some of his earlier work with brother Peter, but Driver’s Ed is the focus. We talk about how funny Kumail Nanjiani is and how figuring out which jokes to keep with a pleasurable challenge, the ace casting that star Sam Nivola is, plus plenty more. We laugh a lot, which is exactly what you want when talking to the man about his work. Driver’s Ed is in theaters and VOD this weekend, so definitely check it out, as it’s a lovely little movie. You won’t regret it!
