Well, this is some unexpected news. Just a few minutes ago, Stephen Colbert and Peter Jackson announced a new Lord of the Rings movie. That in and of itself isn’t too shocking, especially since we’re getting a new one next year, but what makes this such a noteworthy announcement is that Colbert is co-writing this film. More below on this fairly stunning bit of blockbuster news.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, as well as Colbert and Jackson themselves, the former will be writing with Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee. The film takes place after Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, which Andy Serkis is working on. This one has the working title The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, so jot that down for later. Fans of the franchise will surely have some opinions.
This is the synopsis for the project:
“Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began”
