There was a brief moment where Andrew Kevin Walker was one of Hollywood’s hottest screenwriters. Teaming up with David Fincher for Se7en, they both became exciting young artists. Fincher, of course, has gone on to become one of the biggest directors in the business. Walker, on the other hand, has ebbed and flowed, while remaining one of the few scribes in show business that people know the name of. With Psycho Killer now in theaters and representing his latest screenplay, it’s a perfect time to go ahead and rank the films Walker has written.
This here is what I said about Walker’s prior work, with Fincher, for The Killer:
David Fincher reunites with scribe Andrew Kevin Walker for a fiendishly entertaining delight here. They are having a blast, whether it’s with the alter ego’s their protagonist uses while traveling, or in some of the modern amenities of life he utilizes in taking out a target. You’ll never look at sitcom characters or Amazon drop-off boxes the same way again. Walker’s screenplay is clever, to be sure, but directed by Fincher, it just sings. As you might expect, it’s lean and mean work, technically impeccable on every level. From the editing by Kirk Baxter to the cinematography by Erik Messerschmidt, all the way to the brooding score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, it all sucks you in.
Below, you can see how Walker’s work stacks up for me, minus Psycho Killer, which I haven’t been able to see just yet. As you might imagine, it’s his Fincher collaborations that lead the way. So, Se7en is up top, followed by The Killer. Then, it’s really a bit of a dealer’s choice. For me, his script for 8MM is underrated and the movie is pretty interesting.
