Never doubt the Jurassic Park franchise. As flimsily received as the last installment was, Dominion still made over $1 billion at the global box office, and the latest entry, Jurassic World Rebirth, has now grossed over $318.3 million globally in just a few days! Domestically, it has grossed $91.5 million over the three-day weekend, making it the highest-grossing Fourth of July release ever.
Moreover, Scarlett Johansson has now become the highest-grossing actor of all time worldwide, beating Samuel L. Jackson with her movies grossing a combined total of over $15 billion. If you think there isn’t going to be a sequel to Rebirth, you are wrong. It will happen, one way or another. And even if it’s not in the immediate future, as reviews for the Gareth Edwards-directed film were relatively mixed, life will find a way for us to get another one, and that’s a guarantee.
Since COVID, many exhibitors have touted that “X year will be the year of recovery,” though one didn’t anticipate dual strikes in 2023, which made post-pandemic recovery much more difficult. However, we can now officially say that the movies are back in 2025, with plenty of records being set on the big screen right now. We’ve already discussed Jurassic World, but the highest-grossing animated film in the history of cinema was released this year with Ne Zha 2, alongside Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which contributed to the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend ever, along with Lilo & Stitch.
The momentum is poised to continue, as next week, James Gunn finally releases Superman to the world, and two weeks later, The Fantastic Four are set to make their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Of course, Superman comes off the heels of the disastrous DCEU, which has now been fully rebooted and has become the DCU, while Marvel has been on a slope of critical and commercial duds ever since Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (barring a few exceptions).
That said, pre-sales for both movies have been very high, and there’s hope they will renew interest in superhero filmmaking after many tumultuous years. Whether or not they will end up a success, given Hollywood’s incredible streak of hits, one can safely say that the theatrical experience is not dead and will continue to thrive for decades to come.
