Interview: Vincent D’Onofrio Talks Returning as Kingpin in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’

Vincent D’Onofrio’s portrayal of Wilson Fisk is one of the very best villain performances you’ll ever see in a comic book title. I remember where I was, ten years ago, watching the penultimate episode of the first season of Daredevil, specifically the scene where Fisk kills Ben Urich. It was such a terrifying, visceral moment that will be forever ingrained in my memory as the show has now returned with a new iteration, with Daredevil: Born Again

D’Onofrio is currently shooting the second season of the show, and couldn’t say much about what’s coming, but did mention, while speaking to Awards Radar on Zoom, that he is still learning new things about the character after portraying him for the past ten years:

“We were doing a fight scene, Charlie Cox and I, a Daredevil/Fisk fight scene, which is pretty cool. During the scene, a couple of ideas came up that were different and that we hadn’t done before. We’re taking the characters to places they’ve never been to during a fight or even in dialogue together. We took it to a new place, a good mid-second-season place. All the time, there are new notes you can hit, depending on what the writing is and the context of the scene. You can always make choices you never made before.”

As Wilson Fisk attempts to leave his “old activities” behind and pursue municipal politics as the Mayor of New York in the first season of Born Again, D’Onofrio explains that it’s like “a vampire trying to live in the daylight. That would be the metaphor for my character. It’s not possible, but he needs to, so he has to bear the sunlight, and it gets tough. It’s a tough road for him that first season. But he gets what he wants in life, and the way he wants it is not very nice.”

Of course, there was much to unpack regarding the trajectory of the character, as he now heads to the second season. We don’t know much about it, other than it will focus on Matt assembling a team of vigilantes to take down Fisk’s mayoral empire, but D’Onofrio teases that, in that season, “there’s this amazing thing that happens, which I can’t say much about, but it’s a movement which hopefully spins into the third season, I hope, if we get there.”

Here’s hoping more Daredevil arrives soon, but for now, you can watch my full conversation with Vincent below:
