Yesterday was Kurt Russell‘s birthday. The now 74 year old has gone from being a child star to a true A-list legend, now having budding star offspring, to boot. When it comes to purely likable actors, it’s hard to name many that have as much charisma on the big screen as he does. So, as a belated birthday present, I figured I’d pay tribute to the man with a look at his best work to date. Join me in celebrating him, why don’t you?
Below, I’ve shared my Russell top ten list, alongside a few honorable mentions. For me, his best work is, by far, as Herb Brooks in Miracle. He’s also excellent in Death Proof and The Thing. My list also includes other Quentin Tarantino work like The Hateful Eight, as well as such varying fare as Backdraft and Bone Tomahawk. As always, your mileage may vary, but for my money, the top tier here is quite good. He’s a star, plain and simple.
Here now is my ranking of the best Kurt Russell performances so far. Behold:

Honorable Mention: Big Trouble in Little China, Captain Ron, Dark Blue, Silkwood, and Used Cars
10. Overboard
9. Escape from New York
8. Tombstone
7. Vanilla Sky
6. Bone Tomahawk
5. The Hateful Eight
4. Backdraft
3. Death Proof
2. The Thing
1. Miracle

I am shocked that Silkwood didn’t even make your top ten. He was beyond exceptional among an already-perfect ensemble.
That’s mainly due to not having seen the film in quite some time, as well as some fondness for some of his sillier roles…
