Companion is a real calling card film for writer/director Drew Hancock. Now, it’s also much more than that, but it’s impossible to watch this movie and not be excited to see what this storyteller does next. There’s such talent on display, taking a flick that could easily have gone off the rails and instead making it a twisty delight. So, when the opportunity to chat with him came up, I jumped at the chance. Today, that conversation comes your way, and be warned, we get into spoilers…
In my review of the film (here), I had the following to say about Hancock’s filmmaking:
Writer/director Drew Hancock makes a really impressive debut here, mixing genres like a veteran. There’s a dark comedy at the core of this film that he never loses sight of, even when he’s leaning into it also being a sci-fi tale or a psychological thriller. Hancock sees the entirety of Companion throughout and always keeps the audience along for the ride, whether they know what he’s up to or not. It’s a clever construct, one that he pulls off quite well, building out a world with a ton to get caught up in. Kudos.
Below, you can hear my discussion with Hancock. Again, we do not shy away from spoilers, at his suggestion, so if you haven’t seen the film yet, just be warned there. In fact, it’s probably better to see the movie first, just because it’s wonderful. However, the flick is not dependent on its twists, as he explains. We talk about how he crafted it, why it works, and what the process of it all is. He’s a lot of fun to talk to, happy to get into the details, and an ascending talent worth paying attention to. So, this Companion chat was really enjoyable for both of us, and hopefully for you too. Now, go see it!
Here now is my interview with Companion filmmaker Drew Hancock. Enjoy:
