On Sunday evening, Conclave writer Peter Straughan pulled an upset at the Golden Globe Awards when he won Best Screenplay. The only non writer/director of the nominees, he was shocked, as he told me, but it’s an incredibly deserving win. Ever since the Telluride Film Festival, I’ve been raving about what would become my second favorite movie of 2024. Earlier this week, shortly after his Globes win, Straughan hopped on Zoom with me to talk about that experience, the flick, and adapting the book of the same name. Previously, I’ve spoken to director Edward Berger (here) and co-star John Lithgow (here) about the cinematic gem. Today, my chat with Straughan comes your way.
In my review of the film out of Telluride (here), I had the following to say about Straughan:
Director Edward Berger and writer Peter Straughan weave a thoroughly compelling tale, with twists and turns that never feel cheap. Volker Bertelmann‘s score leans into the thriller elements, which Berger and Straughan never shy away from. They’re in complete control, which is why the humor works, as well as the twist. What should be a big ask ends up feeling like a perfectly wild denouement.
Below, you can see my conversation with Straughan. We started by talking about the Globe win, which he gives a funny response to. Then, it’s on to Conclave itself and the act of adaptation. He’s very experienced in that regard and has some very interesting things to say on the matter. So, be sure to check out our discussion, but also, if you somehow have not seen the film yet, get on that ASAP. The frontrunner in Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars is also simply one of last year’s best movies, full stop.
Here now is my interview with Conclave screenwriter Peter Straughan. Enjoy:
