The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, we’re talking about how horror isn’t just for October…
I obviously love horror movies. The very existence of this column suggests that. Moreover, I love watching these films with people. Alongside comedies, it’s the most communal of genres. So, October becomes a very fun time for me, since so many others want to engage with fright flicks. They become even more mainstream for 31 days each year. Myles obviously documents his situation with the annual 31 Days of Halloween exercise. My engagement is a bit different, but it has me thinking about how it should be just as fun in November and beyond.
As some of you know, a few industry friends and I do a movie night almost every Friday or Saturday, and it’s a double feature situation. In October, we do fright flicks, of course, but sometimes, the mood is just right for a fun horror title. This past month alone, we watched titles like Chopping Mall, Dawn of the Dead, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Maniac Cop, Night of the Creeps, The Return of the Living Dead, and Sleepaway Camp. These are obviously fun times, but here’s the thing…with the right mindset, they would be just as fun outside of the Halloween season.
Now in November, I think more people should embrace the sort of goofy fun time you have with horror in October. Freddy vs Jason is just as fun on November 1st as it is on October 31st. The Ring works just as well around Thanksgiving as it does on Halloween. Enjoyable cinema is enjoyable cinema, no matter the time of year.
Hell, last year brought Eli Roth‘s Thanksgiving, which should become an annual horror viewing around this time. It doesn’t need to only be watched in late November, just like Halloween doesn’t need to only be watched in October. They bring us joy, so we should embrace that and expand on it throughout the year. Last week brought some very sad/scary news for many of us, so even just as a distraction, it can really serve a purpose.
Of course, this is just my opinion. Perhaps you feel very strongly about horror films belonging in October. If you want these movies only during spooky season, that’s cool, too. I just think they can tickle our fancy year round. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts on the matter, though. I’m all ears…
Stay tuned for another Sunday Scaries installment next week!
