Next week, both the Venice International Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival kick off. I’ll be on the ground for Telluride, as always. The week after, the Toronto International Film Festival begins. I’ll be at TIFF as well. Then, I sleep a tiny bit, before the New York Film Festival gets underway at the end of September until October. It’s a lot, yes, but it’s also a very exciting time!
Venice starts us off first, and there’s a quick turnaround here, as plenty of the films at that festival head stateside to Telluride. This festival features the likes of Babygirl, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Brutalist, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, Joker: Folie à Deux, Maria, Queer, The Room Next Door, Wolfs, and more. It will be a high profile whirlwind, but one where the first hints of Oscar fare will begin.
Days later, and connected to Venice, title/buzz-wise, is Telluride. I’ll have my Telluride preview in a few days, but the lineup here is still a secret. I have my hunches, may of which you can also figure out due to festival designations. I also have a few inside baseball tips that I’m keeping close to the vest. Don’t worry, all will be revealed next week, but some Venice titles will be coming to Telluride, just like some Telluride titles will be going to TIFF. That’s how the festival season really gets underway.
Toronto comes next, right after Telluride ends. TIFF has the largest lineup, by far, with movies like Anora, Babygirl, Bird, The Brutalist, Conclave, The Deb, Eden, Emilia Pérez, The End, The Fire Inside, The Friend, Hard Truths, The Last Republican, The Last Showgirl, Megalopolis, Millers in Marriage, Nightbitch, Nutcrackers, Oh, Canada, The Order, The Piano Lesson, Queer, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, The Room Next Door, Saturday Night, The Shrouds, The Substance, Unstoppable, We Live in Time, The Wild Robot, Without Blood, and many more. This cornucopia of titles will definitely give us lots to talk about.
Finally, New York sort of caps this portion of the fall festival season. NYFF this year features Anora, Blitz, The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez, The Friend, Hard Truths, Maria, Nickel Boys, Oh, Canada, Queer, A Real Pain, The Room Next Door, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, The Shrouds, and more. Once NYFF wraps, so too does fall festival season, at least in its main form.
So, strap in. Next week, you’ll get my Telluride preview, as well as all of my reviews from the festival. Then, it’s the same for Toronto and TIFF. Sit tight, as we’re about to know a whole hell of a lot more about the films we’ll be talking about during awards season. For now, we’re literally just days away, here at the tail end of August, from the start of the fall festival season…
Stay tuned for all of our festival season coverage here at Awards Radar!
