Reports of the box office’s demise are greatly exaggerated. Here’s one proof: Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now surpassed Frozen 2, another Disney movie, as the highest-grossing animated movie of all time! This comes after the studio has had quite its shares of box office duds, with Lightyear and Elemental, and recovered from over a year-and-a-half of films released exclusively on Disney+.
With a $1.463 billion worldwide tally, the film has beat Frozen 2’s $1.45 billion gross. Some will count the 2019 remake of The Lion King as animated, though Disney does not. If this were the case, it would be the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, as that production made over $1.6 billion at the global box office. All of this is fantastic news for Disney and Pixar, who look to be recovering from their worst-ever year in 2023, with a series of box office bombs and critical disappointments.
So far, Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part Two, and is also the only movie to have made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This weekend, Deadpool & Wolverine is looking to obliterate Inside Out 2‘s opening weekend record, though the jury is still out on whether or not the film could reach that coveted mark, which was once a guarantee for Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s hoping more records are held this year and that moviegoing gets the boost it desperately needs soon!
