As the summer movie season awakened from its slumber with the major successes of Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Inside Out 2, the month of July is also looking to bring in the goods with Despicable Me 4, Twisters, and Deadpool & Wolverine.
For the Shawn Levy-directed team-up between Ryan Reynolds‘ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine, box office tracking is expected to be historic, with the film set to open to at least $160 to $165 million during its domestic opening weekend. If this occurs, it would be the best opening of any movie released in 2024 and the highest-grossing R-rated opening weekend of all time.
Of course, this would be a major boost for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has been on a downward spiral since the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Minus the successes of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, and Loki – Season 2 last year, the franchise hasn’t been hitting the same way as it did just a few years ago when Avengers: Endgame towered the box office.
It would also be a great test for Shawn Levy in the MCU, who is circling to helm the upcoming Avengers film. However, nothing is set in stone for him, as he will embark on directing two episodes of Stranger Things and potentially work on a yet-to-be-titled Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. More candidates are reportedly in the mix, but Marvel seems eager to want to work with Levy again, a sign that the film will not only deliver the goods in its story, but be a massive critical and commercial hit.
