‘Queer,’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ And More Eyed to Play at Venice

The Venice Film Festival will soon be coming our way, and Variety has reported that many high-profile films are set to debut at La Mostra. Though nothing has officially been confirmed, word-of-mouth has begun on what could play and which stars will roll up to Venice during the festival.

It’s no surprise that Joker: Folie à Deux could premiere at the festival, as the last movie won the Golden Lion in 2019, with Pablo Larrain‘s Maria, starring Angelina Jolie, also has the opportunity to play, since both Jackie and Spencer also appeared at the festival.

Luca Guadagnino could also make his grand return to the festival with Queer, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, about an expat who becomes infatuated with a younger man. Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote Challengers (previously set to open in Venice before the strikes delayed it), has penned the screenplay based on the book of the same name by William S. Burroughs.

Jon WattsWolfs and Ron Howard‘s Eden could also premiere during the festival, though not in its official competition. Both movies contain high-profile casts that could boast important word-of-mouth as the promotional rollout for the two begins.

Julian Schnabel’s In the Hand of Dante, which boasts an incredible cast comprised of Gal Gadot, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Gerard Butler, Al Pacino, and Martin Scorsese, also has a big chance of opening at the festival, while Johnny Depp could also return to Venice with his directorial feature Modì, starring Riccardo Scamarcio as the titular figure. Pacino is also set to star in that film as Maurice Gangnat.

Finally, Mike Leigh‘s Hard Truths and Walter SallesI’m Still Here are also in contention to premiere at Venice. Again, nothing is set in stone yet, but it’s certainly exciting to see big, hotly-anticipated titles make a splash at the festival before their theatrical premieres. However, it has already been confirmed that Isabelle Huppert will preside over the jury.

The festival’s latest edition will run from August 28 to September 7.
