Simon Kinberg to Produce ‘Star Trek’ Prequel Movie for Paramount

The Star Trek franchise is planning to boldly go to the big screen again after many failed attempts with Quentin Tarantino‘s R-rated Star Trek movie and multiple directors attached to Star Trek 4. The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that producer Simon Kinberg will produce a brand-new Star Trek feature, with Toby Haynes directing and Seth Grahame-Smith writing the screenplay.

The film will be set decades before the J.J. Abrams-directed movie, focusing on the creation of the Starfleet and humankind’s first contact with alien life. Abrams is also acting as the executive producer, hoping to relaunch the franchise to the silver screen again after 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond bombed at the box office despite positive reviews.

The Star Trek franchise has endured great success with its streaming television series, which has several offshoot projects in development for Paramount+, including a made-for-streaming movie that will see Michelle Yeoh reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery.
